Hurricane Dorian 2019

In the wake of Hurricane Dorian in September 2019, Burnaby Urban Search and Rescue (BUSAR) was deployed to Marsh Harbor on the Island of Abaco, one of the regions most severely impacted by the storm. Under the guidance of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), BUSAR focused primarily on search and recovery operations, navigating through the hazardous, debris-laden landscape exacerbated by a 20-foot storm surge to locate and recover victims. Alongside these efforts, BUSAR significantly contributed to humanitarian aid, assisting with critical logistics at the local hospital by managing supplies and transport. While also collaborating with animal rescue organizations to ensure the rescue of stray dogs, BUSAR’s primary commitment was supporting the community’s immediate recovery needs underscoring their vital role in the disaster response.
